Overview of Structural Component Systems
Structural Component Systems (SCS) is a Nevada corporation created to design, develop and market modular structural components for accelerated bridge construction. The SCS principal bridge components are modular columns, girders and ductility devices that form the supports of a bridge below the traffic deck. The RAPID Components™ have been developed to provide solutions to key areas of bridge design and construction.
Standardization. Components are selected based on well-established engineering pre-design rather than designed from scratch. This allows the overall design of a bridge to be faster and potentially more reliable. Bidding standard components reduces potential for change orders.
Construction. The components are designed to be easily field assembled into a complete bridge support in a short time frame. The connections between components are designed to allow adjustment in the field as well as assist the contractor in quickly and accurately placing the components into position.
Survivability and Repair. A significant component is the “Seismic Ductility Device” or SDD that acts as a structural fuse to protect the remainder of the structure from earthquake or other lateral force effects. The component is detailed to be field repairable without bridge shutdown.
Maintenance and Inspection. The key connection components are designed to be readily observable. A key aspect of the design is an enclosed area that is protected from the environment while allowing for housing instrumentation and/or data logging equipment.
Architectural Customization. The connection component cover (“fairing”)c an be of simple or sophisticated design. Since this component is not-structural (does not carry loads), the design does not affect the structural performance of the bridge.
Durability: Components are intended to be shop fabricated allowing for improved quality control and less interference from weather and other field issues. The SDD protects the overall structure against damage form extreme events such as earthquakes. The design allows for easier inspection and maintenance for improved life
